Frequently Asked Questions

How should I introduce deodorant to a pre-teen?

Start by having an open, positive conversation about body changes and self-care. When my son turned 10 years old, we positioned deodorant as a fun, grown-up self-care step that was cool and an exciting part of his development. He was part of the selection process and got to try different scents and pick the ones he liked. Give children space in their room or bathroom to keep the deodorant. Position this as a positive change, not an embarrassing one. We also recommend encouraging kids to shower regularly, especially after sports or exercise. Explain that deodorant helps them feel fresh and confident throughout the day.

What deodorant ingredients should you avoid for sensitive skin?

If your child has sensitive skin, it's best to avoid common irritants such as aluminum compounds (often found in antiperspirants), parabens and phthalates (preservatives that may irritate), synthetic fragrances or dyes (can cause allergic reactions), and baking soda in some cases (it's natural but can be too alkaline for delicate skin). Instead, look for deodorants made with gentle, plant-based ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, zinc ricinoleate, or arrowroot powder — these help absorb moisture and neutralize odor naturally.

Are aerosol deodorants safe for kids?

Aerosol deodorants aren't the best choice for children. Sprays can be harsh on sensitive skin and may irritate the lungs if inhaled. And if your kids are like ours, they will definitely spray it everywhere. They're also less eco-friendly and harder to apply evenly. Stick deodorants, roll-ons, or cream formulas are safer and easier for kids to control. Look for products specifically labeled for kids or pre-teens, which are designed to be gentle, non-toxic, and free from strong chemicals or heavy fragrances.
